ZuiTube - Youtube for kids

Yes, you read it right. There's a new video site catered for our little ones and maybe a bunch of us :). First there was Kidzui, the company behind the child-safe web browser of the same name anad now they did it again with its online video experience with ZuiTube, a kid-friendly video destination site.

The main tag lines for ZuiTube are "Play, Laugh, Learn and Share". They boasts of having the largest video collection for kids anywhere, Videos approved by parents and teachers, Channels created by kids and editors,TV mode that plays all videos,search with suggestions and KidRank.

ZuiTube, like Kidzui is free to use. The company makes its money by selling premium memberships that give parents deeper controls and kids more personalization tools and virtual goods.

Other players in the independent kid vid space include Totlol, which had to put up a registration wall in order to stay in business, and Kideo, which is a browser-based video player that pulls up random clips on a continuous cycle.

OpenSSH Server Best Security Practices

OpenSSH is a FREE version of the SSH connectivity tools that technical users of the Internet rely on. Users of telnet, rlogin, and ftp may not realize that their password is transmitted across the Internet unencrypted, but it is. OpenSSH encrypts all traffic (including passwords) to effectively eliminate eavesdropping, connection hijacking, and other attacks. Additionally, OpenSSH provides secure tunneling capabilities and several authentication methods, and supports all SSH protocol versions.

Currently, almost all communications in computer networks are done without encryption. As a consequence, anyone who has access to any machine connected to the network can listen in on any communication. This is being done by hackers, curious administrators, employers, criminals, industrial spies, and governments. Some networks leak off enough electromagnetic radiation that data may be captured even from a distance.

When you log in, your password goes in the network in plain text. Thus, any listener can then use your account to do any evil he likes. Many incidents have been encountered worldwide where crackers have started programs on workstations without the owner's knowledge just to listen to the network and collect passwords. Programs for doing this are available on the Internet, or can be built by a competent programmer in a few hours.

Businesses have trade secrets, patent applications in preparation, pricing information, subcontractor information, client data, personnel data, financial information, etc. Currently, anyone with access to the network (any machine on the network) can listen to anything that goes in the network, without any regard to normal access restrictions.

Many companies are not aware that information can so easily be recovered from the network. They trust that their data is safe since nobody is supposed to know that there is sensitive information in the network, or because so much other data is transferred in the network. This is not a safe policy.

Before implementing these here are the config files and locations:

Default Config Files and SSH Port

* /etc/ssh/sshd_config - OpenSSH server configuration file.
* /etc/ssh/ssh_config - OpenSSH client configuration file.
* ~/.ssh/ - Users ssh configuration directory.
* ~/.ssh/authorized_keys or ~/.ssh/authorized_keys - Lists the public keys (RSA or DSA) that can be used to log into the user’s account
* /etc/nologin - If this file exists, sshd refuses to let anyone except root log in.
* /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny : Access controls lists that should be enforced by tcp-wrappers are defined here.
* SSH default port : TCP 22

Here are Some best OpenSSH Server security practice that you can implement:

#1: Disable OpenSSH Server

Workstations and laptop can work without OpenSSH server. If you need not to provide the remote login and file transfer capabilities of SSH, disable and remove the SSHD server. CentOS / RHEL / Fedora Linux user can disable and remove openssh-server with yum command:

# chkconfig sshd off
# yum erase openssh-server

Debian / Ubuntu Linux user can disable and remove the same with apt-get command:

# apt-get remove openssh-server

You may need to update your iptables script to remove ssh exception rule. Under CentOS / RHEL / Fedora edit the files /etc/sysconfig/iptables and /etc/sysconfig/ip6tables.

Once done restart iptables service:

# service iptables restart
# service ip6tables restart

#2: Only Use SSH Protocol 2

SSH protocol version 1 (SSH-1) has man-in-the-middle attacks problems and security vulnerabilities. SSH-1 is obsolete and should be avoided at all cost. Open sshd_config file and make sure the following line exists:

Protocol 2

#3: Limit Users' SSH Access

By default all systems user can login via SSH using their password or public key. Sometime you create UNIX / Linux user account for ftp or email purpose. However, those user can login to system using ssh. They will have full access to system tools including compilers and scripting languages such as Perl, Python which can open network ports and do many other fancy things. One of my client has really outdated php script and an attacker was able to create a new account on the system via a php script. However, attacker failed to get into box via ssh because it wasn't in AllowUsers.

Only allow root, vivek and jerry user to use the system via SSH, add the following to sshd_config:

AllowUsers root vivek jerry

Alternatively, you can allow all users to login via SSH but deny only a few users, with the following line:

DenyUsers saroj anjali foo

You can also configure Linux PAM allows or deny login via the sshd server. You can allow list of group name to access or deny access to the ssh.

#4: Configure Idle Log Out Timeout Interval

User can login to server via ssh and you can set an idel timeout interval to avoid unattended ssh session. Open sshd_config and make sure following values are configured:

ClientAliveInterval 300
ClientAliveCountMax 0

You are setting an idle timeout interval in seconds (300 secs = 5 minutes). After this interval has passed, the idle user will be automatically kicked out (read as logged out).See how to automatically log BASH / TCSH / SSH users out after a period of inactivity for more details.

#5: Disable .rhosts Files

Don't read the user's ~/.rhosts and ~/.shosts files. Update sshd_config with the following settings:

IgnoreRhosts yes

SSH can emulate the behavior of the obsolete rsh command, just disable insecure access via RSH.

#6: Disable Host-Based Authentication

To disable host-based authentication, update sshd_config with the following option:

HostbasedAuthentication no

#7: Disable root Login via SSH

There is no need to login as root via ssh over a network. Normal users can use su or sudo (recommended) to gain root level access. This also make sure you get full auditing information about who ran privileged commands on the system via sudo. To disable root login via SSH, update sshd_config with the following line:

PermitRootLogin no

#8: Enable a Warning Banner

Set a warning banner by updating sshd_config with the following line:

Banner /etc/issue

#8: Firewall SSH Port # 22

You need to firewall ssh port # 22 by updating iptables or pf firewall configurations. Usually, OpenSSH server must only accept connections from your LAN or other remote WAN sites only.

Netfilter (Iptables) Configuration

Update /etc/sysconfig/iptables (Redhat and friends specific file) to accept connection only from 192.168.1.0/24 and 202.54.1.5/29, enter:

-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 192.168.1.0/24 -m state --state NEW -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 202.54.1.5/29 -m state --state NEW -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT

If you've dual stacked sshd with IPv6, edit /etc/sysconfig/ip6tables (Redhat and friends specific file), enter:

-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s ipv6network::/ipv6mask -m tcp -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT

Replace ipv6network::/ipv6mask with actual IPv6 ranges.

*BSD PF Firewall Configuration

If you are using PF firewall update /etc/pf.conf as follows:

pass in on $ext_if inet proto tcp from {192.168.1.0/24, 202.54.1.5/29} to $ssh_server_ip port ssh flags S/SA synproxy state

#9: Change SSH Port and Limit IP Binding

By default SSH listen to all available interfaces and IP address on the system. Limit ssh port binding and change ssh port (by default brute forcing scripts only try to connects to port # 22). To bind to 192.168.1.5 and 202.54.1.5 IPs and to port 300, add or correct the following line:

Port 300
ListenAddress 192.168.1.5
ListenAddress 202.54.1.5

A better approach to use proactive approaches scripts such as fail2ban or denyhosts (see below).

#10: Use Strong SSH Passwords and Passphrase

It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to use strong user passwords and passphrase for your keys. Brute force attack works because you use dictionary based passwords. You can force users to avoid passwords against a dictionary attack and use john the ripper tool to find out existing weak passwords. Here is a sample random password generator (put in your ~/.bashrc):

genpasswd() {
local l=$1
[ "$l" == "" ] && l=20
tr -dc A-Za-z0-9_ < /dev/urandom | head -c ${l} | xargs
}

Run it:

genpasswd 16

Output:

uw8CnDVMwC6vOKgW

#11: Use Public Key Based Authentication

Use public/private key pair with password protection for the private key. See how to use RSA and DSA key based authentication. Never ever use passphrase free key (passphrase key less) login.

#12: Use Keychain Based Authentication

keychain is a special bash script designed to make key-based authentication incredibly convenient and flexible. It offers various security benefits over passphrase-free keys.

#13: Chroot SSHD (Lock Down Users To Their Home Directories)

By default users are allowed to browse the server directories such as /etc/, /bin and so on. You can protect ssh, using os based chroot or use special tools such as rssh. With the release of OpenSSH 4.8p1 or 4.9p1, you no longer have to rely on third-party hacks such as rssh or complicated chroot(1) setups to lock users to their home directories.

#14: Use TCP Wrappers

TCP Wrapper is a host-based Networking ACL system, used to filter network access to Internet. OpenSSH does supports TCP wrappers. Just update your /etc/hosts.allow file as follows to allow SSH only from 192.168.1.2 172.16.23.12 :

sshd : 192.168.1.2 172.16.23.12

#15: Disable Empty Passwords

You need to explicitly disallow remote login from accounts with empty passwords, update sshd_config with the following line:

PermitEmptyPasswords no

#16: Thwart SSH Crackers (Brute Force Attack)

Brute force is a method of defeating a cryptographic scheme by trying a large number of possibilities using a single or distributed computer network. To prevents brute force attacks against SSH, use the following softwares:

* DenyHosts is a Python based security tool for SSH servers. It is intended to prevent brute force attacks on SSH servers by monitoring invalid login attempts in the authentication log and blocking the originating IP addresses.
* Explains how to setup DenyHosts under RHEL / Fedora and CentOS Linux.
* Fail2ban is a similar program that prevents brute force attacks against SSH.
* security/sshguard-pf protect hosts from brute force attacks against ssh and other services using pf.
* security/sshguard-ipfw protect hosts from brute force attacks against ssh and other services using ipfw.
* security/sshguard-ipfilter protect hosts from brute force attacks against ssh and other services using ipfilter.
* security/sshblock block abusive SSH login attempts.
* security/sshit checks for SSH/FTP bruteforce and blocks given IPs.
* BlockHosts Automatic blocking of abusive IP hosts.
* Blacklist Get rid of those bruteforce attempts.
* Brute Force Detection A modular shell script for parsing application logs and checking for authentication failures. It does this using a rules system where application specific options are stored including regular expressions for each unique auth format.
* IPQ BDB filter May be considered as a fail2ban lite.

#17: Rate-limit Incoming Port # 22 Connections

Both netfilter and pf provides rate-limit option to perform simple throttling on incoming connections on port # 22.

Iptables Example

The following example will drop incoming connections which make more than 5 connection attempts upon port 22 within 60 seconds:

#!/bin/bash
inet_if=eth1
ssh_port=22
$IPT -I INPUT -p tcp --dport ${ssh_port} -i ${inet_if} -m state --state NEW -m recent --set
$IPT -I INPUT -p tcp --dport ${ssh_port} -i ${inet_if} -m state --state NEW -m recent --update --seconds 60 --hitcount 5 -j DROP

Call above script from your iptables scripts. Another config option:

$IPT -A INPUT -i ${inet_if} -p tcp --dport ${ssh_port} -m state --state NEW -m limit --limit 3/min --limit-burst 3 -j ACCEPT
$IPT -A INPUT -i ${inet_if} -p tcp --dport ${ssh_port} -m state --state ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
$IPT -A OUTPUT -o ${inet_if} -p tcp --sport ${ssh_port} -m state --state ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
# another one line example
# $IPT -A INPUT -i ${inet_if} -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -p tcp --dport 22 -m limit --limit 5/minute --limit-burst 5-j ACCEPT

See iptables man page for more details.

*BSD PF Example

The following will limits the maximum number of connections per source to 20 and rate limit the number of connections to 15 in a 5 second span. If anyone breaks our rules add them to our abusive_ips table and block them for making any further connections. Finally, flush keyword kills all states created by the matching rule which originate from the host which exceeds these limits.

sshd_server_ip="202.54.1.5"
table persist
block in quick from
pass in on $ext_if proto tcp to $sshd_server_ip port ssh flags S/SA keep state (max-src-conn 20, max-src-conn-rate 15/5, overload flush)

#18: Use Port Knocking

Port knocking is a method of externally opening ports on a firewall by generating a connection attempt on a set of prespecified closed ports. Once a correct sequence of connection attempts is received, the firewall rules are dynamically modified to allow the host which sent the connection attempts to connect over specific port(s). A sample port Knocking example for ssh using iptables:

$IPT -N stage1
$IPT -A stage1 -m recent --remove --name knock
$IPT -A stage1 -p tcp --dport 3456 -m recent --set --name knock2

$IPT -N stage2
$IPT -A stage2 -m recent --remove --name knock2
$IPT -A stage2 -p tcp --dport 2345 -m recent --set --name heaven

$IPT -N door
$IPT -A door -m recent --rcheck --seconds 5 --name knock2 -j stage2
$IPT -A door -m recent --rcheck --seconds 5 --name knock -j stage1
$IPT -A door -p tcp --dport 1234 -m recent --set --name knock

$IPT -A INPUT -m --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
$IPT -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -m recent --rcheck --seconds 5 --name heaven -j ACCEPT
$IPT -A INPUT -p tcp --syn -j doo

* fwknop is an implementation that combines port knocking and passive OS fingerprinting.
* Multiple-port knocking Netfilter/IPtables only implementation.

#19: Use Log Analyzer

These tools make your log reading life easier. It will go through your logs for a given period of time and make a report in the areas that you wish with the detail that you wish. Make sure LogLevel is set to INFO or DEBUG in sshd_config:

LogLevel INFO

#20: Patch OpenSSH and Operating Systems

It is recommended that you use tools such as yum, apt-get, freebsd-update and others to keep systems up to date with the latest security patches.

Other Options

To hide openssh version, you need to update source code and compile openssh again. Make sure following options are enabled in sshd_config:

# Turn on privilege separation
UsePrivilegeSeparation yes

# Prevent the use of insecure home directory and key file permissions
StrictModes yes

# Turn on reverse name checking
VerifyReverseMapping yes

# Do you need port forwarding?
AllowTcpForwarding no
X11Forwarding no

# Specifies whether password authentication is allowed. The default is yes.
PasswordAuthentication no

Verify your sshd_config file before restarting / reloading changes:
# /usr/sbin/sshd -t

Tighter SSH security with two-factor or three-factor (or more) authentication.

iPhone bluetooth transfer via Jailbreak

Some of us are wondering when Bluetooth file transfer will become available on Apple’s mobile phone. Well, wonder no more because thanks to the developer MeDevil, iPhone Bluetooth file transfer may become a reality sooner than later as he is currently working on one as we speak.

This video is just a peak into the future of his app, and when the time is right, it will be unleashed to jailbroken iPhones all over the world via the iSpazio repo.

There’s still no word on when the full vesion will be released, but considering that these iPhone developers are such efficient folks, I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes live by next week.

Hackers exploit “Hayden” sex videos

MANILA, Philippines—Hackers and computer virus writers have exploited the controversial sex videos now making rounds on the Internet, antivirus firm Trend Micro said Tuesday.

Malicious software are making their rounds in some US government websites masking themselves as links to the actual sex videos, Trend Micro through TrendLabs said.

The antivirus firm has identified computer Trojans TROJ_DLOAD.TID and its payload, TROJ_COGNAC.J, hidden in at least two US government websites.

The first attack was detected early last week, allegedly in the website of the San Bernardino County (http://www.sbcounty.gov/).

The attacked was meant to trick people into clicking a link to reveal supposed nude video of local actress Katrina Halili who was among those embroiled in the controversial sex videos.

The second attack, found by TrendLabs Analyst Joseph Pacamarra, was located in a state-wide information portal of Washington DC.

The security software firm has not yet announced the name of the website.

Similar to the San Bernardino County website attack, the other attack on the other US government website also leads to a video website, which supposedly contains the lurid videos.

TrendLabs explained that a blank website opens when a user clicks on the link in the compromised US government website. This then requires the user to download a codec to be able to watch the video. But that codec software allows the Trojan to slip into the user’s computer, enabling the virus writers to sneak in more malicious software into their systems.

No explanation was made as to why the computer virus authors chose the controversial sex scandal rocking the Philippines to trick people in a US government website to deliver their malware.

The sex video scandal has embroiled Filipino celebrity doctor Hayden Kho and sexy actress Halili and other personalities.

Nortel assets to be sold to Nokia

MONTREAL--Canadian telecommunications firm Nortel, in bankruptcy protection since January, will sell most of its wireless business to Nokia Siemens Networks for $650 million.

Nortel also announced Friday it was making headway in discussions with other parties to sell its other businesses.

Nortel will apply to delist its common shares from trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange, the company said in a statement.

The agreement with Nokia also specifies that at least 2,500 Nortel employees can continue working with the new owner.

Nortel head Mike Zafirovski said the value of Nortel's wireless business was recognized worldwide and the agreement with Nokia represented the best path forward.

"We have determined the best way to do this is to find buyers for our businesses who can carry Nortel innovation forward, while preserving employment to the greatest extent possible," he said.

"This will ensure Nortel's strong assets -- technologies, customer relationships, and employees -- continue to play an important role in driving the future of communications.

But the announcement foreshadows the liquidation of the struggling Canadian company that was once a pillar of the country's telecoms industry.

The Nortel wireless business is the second largest supplier of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) infrastructure in the world.

CDMA is a channel access method utilized by various radio communication technologies that allow several transmitters to send information simultaneously over a single communication channel.

Nortel wireless does business with three of the five top CDMA operators globally, including Verizon Wireless, which operates the largest wireless voice and data network in the United States, company officials said.

Nortel said it will file the asset sale agreement with the US Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. A similar motion for the bidding procedures will be filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the company said.

Once Canada's largest company, Nortel has been struggling since the dot.com collapse.

When it filed for bankruptcy protection in both the United States and Canada in January, Nortel faced some $107 million in interest on its debt alone.

The company lost $3.4 billion in the third quarter of 2008 as revenues fell 14 percent.

Last year, Nortel said it was slashing 2,100 jobs mostly in North America and would transfer another 1,000 jobs to lower-cost countries, following deep losses.

Nortel, which did business in 150 countries and had about 26,000 employees around the world in February, traces its history back to 1882 as the mechanical department of Bell Telephone Canada.

It was later known as Northern Electric and Northern Telecom before changing its name in 1999 to Nortel Networks Corporation.

Free anti-virus software from Microsoft

Microsoft will soon release a free anti-virus software so people on tight budgets won't skimp on protecting their computers from hackers.

A test version of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) will be publicly available for download beginning June 23 in Brazil, Israel and the United States. It is to be rolled out in other countries later in the year.

"Cost and performance barriers prevent many consumers from using up-to-date security software to protect their PCs," Microsoft said in a statement.

The US software giant described MSE as "a no-cost anti-malware solution that provides consumers with quality protection from threats including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans."

The technology firm said that effective anti-virus protection is a "must-have" for computer users given increases in the number and severity of attacks by cyber criminals using malicious software to infect machines.

Paying to buy and routinely update computer security software "does not meet the needs of many consumers," including those in emerging markets where money and resources are scarce, according to Microsoft.

Free Data Recovery Software

Have you ever you lost some files and didn't have your data backup in place? Well, as long as your hardware was not physically damaged, there is still a chance you may be able to recover your files with free or very inexpensive data recovery software. Free data recovery software is a little hard to come by but here are a few good ones you can try.

There are two important things to consider with data recovery:

1.if your data is valuable and critical then you shouldn't be messing around with freeware. There are a lot of data recovery software and services out there.

2. If you decide to go the freeware or shareware, whatever data recovery tool you try just try to use one that DOES NOT REQUIRE INSTALLATION. That's right, the software should run right off floppy, flash or CD. For recovery software that requires installation, you must have a second drive! Otherwise, installation of the recovery software will just permanently overwrite your data.

Here's the list of freeware data recovery tools:

NTFS-reader:

NTFS Boot Disk provides access to your NTFS drives in an MS-DOS environment (long filenames are supported). NTFS Reader for DOS will allow you to browse and recover all kinds of deleted files.

Although it looks rudimentary, the DOSishness is actually a real boon since Windows isn't running and mucking up your data with disk swapping. NTFS provides good data browsing and preview functionality and runs straight from a boot disk (which you should make on another computer).

PC-Inspector File Recovery
PC Inspector File Recovery is a data recovery program with support for FAT 12/16/32 and NTFS file systems. It recovers files with the original time and date stamp, and can optionally restore them to a network drive and can recover many files, even when a header entry is no longer available. On FAT systems, the programs finds partitions automatically, even if the boot sector or FAT has been erased or damaged. PC Inspector File Recovery offers an easy to use interface that will scan your drive and automatically make files that can be recovered available from a "Deleted" folder in an Explorer Style navigation tree.

To be able to use PC Inspector File Recovery you need a working Windows System. Never install the current version on the drive from which you intend to recover data! The program must be installed and run on a second, independent drive.

Restoration:

Restoration is an easy to use and straight forward tool to undelete files that were removed from the recycle bin or directly deleted from within Windows. Upon start, you can scan for all files that may be recovered and also limit the results by entering a search term or extension.

In addition, Restoration also provides an option to wipe the found files beyond simple recovery. And as such it is not only a data-recovery tool but also a security cleanup application. You can use it to totally delete your files so that no recovery is possible.

The program is very small and completely stand-alone, it does not require installation and can also run from a Floppy disk. Restoration works with FAT and NTFS as well as digital cameras cards.

Common Oracle installation errors with Linux

Found this great generic installation problems on Linux with possible solutions and thought of posting thm here for easy reference.

Thanks to Rohit Gupta who originally posted this, you may visit his site for updates.

1. Installation can fail during linking phase with errors like "errors in invoking target Install_isqlplus of makefile /u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.7/sqlplus/lib/ins_sqlplus.mk"

Reason/Resolution: Linking problems are usually associated with incorrect version of gcc packages of your OS version.

For 9i installation, gcc version should be 3.2.3 and for 10g installation, it should be 3.4.6. You can check the version by the command "gcc -v". Usually, 3.4.6 is the default.

For activating correct gcc version for 9i installation on 32bit OS (i386):

$ mv /usr/bin/gcc /usr/bin/gcc.orig
$ mv /usr/bin/g++ /usr/bin/g++.orig
$ ln -s /usr/bin/i386-redhat-linux-gcc32 /usr/bin/gcc
$ ln -s /usr/bin/i386-redhat-linux-g++32 /usr/bin/g++

For activating correct gcc version for 9i installation on 64bit OS (x86_64):

$ mv /usr/bin/gcc /usr/bin/gcc.orig
$ mv /usr/bin/g++ /usr/bin/g++.orig
$ ln -s /usr/bin/x86_64-redhat-linux-gcc32 /usr/bin/gcc
$ ln -s /usr/bin/x86_64-redhat-linux-g++32 /usr/bin/g++

Refer to Metalink Note: 353529.1 and 169706.1 for installation pre-requisites

2. "There is no non-empty value for variable s_jservPort under section Ports in file /u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0/Apache/ports.ini"

Reason/Resolution: This problem is usually encountered when you are making a second attempt for installing the software after a failed previous installation. This is an ignorable error. If you open the file : /u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0/Apache/ports.ini , you will see that the "s_jservPort " might be defined above the "Ports" section . We need to just place this variable under "ports" section. In case you are not using IAS or Grid Control, you can safely ignore this error or do the settings manually as mentioned above. In any case there should be no operational impacts on the database.

3. Errors in writing few files like "error in writing to file /u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0/Apache/Apache/conf/ssl.key/server.key"

Reason/Resolution: Again, This problem is usually encountered when you are making a second attempt for installing the software after a failed previous installation. The files mentioned in these errors are actually created during the previous attempt and can not be overwritten because they are created as read only while installation. So to proceed with the installation, you need to change the permissions on these files (using chmod) to make them writable. Even better solution is that before starting the installation again, remove the Oracle_Home completely which was created and populated during the previous attempt for installation, and create a fresh and empty directory for Oracle_Home

4. "Error occurred during initialization of VM
Unable to load native library: /tmp/OraInstall2003-10-25_03-14-57PM/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so: symbol __libc_wait, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference"

Reason/Resolution: To resolve the __libc_wait symbol issue, download the p3006854_9204 patch p3006854_9204_LINUX.zip from http://metalink.oracle.com/. See bug 3006854 for more information. To apply the patch, run

5. OUI Hangs at 18% - "Copying naeet.o"

Reason/Resolution: The reason is that environment variable LD_ASSUME_KERNEL has not been set. Check the metalink notes:

Note: 360142.1: When Running OUI, OUI Hangs at 18% Copying naeet.o
Note: 377217.1: What should the value of LD_ASSUME_KERNEL be set to for Linux?

Problems specific to 9i RAC installation:

1. On starting the ORACM service, you can get the error
ocmstart.sh: Error: Restart is too frequent
ocmstart.sh: Info: Check the system configuration and fix the problem.
ocmstart.sh: Info: After you fixed the problem, remove the timestamp file
ocmstart.sh: Info: "/u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.7/oracm/log/ocmstart.ts"

Reason/Resolution: To resolve this, remove the file $ORACLE_HOME/oracm/log/osmstart.ts and then you should be able to start the service.

2. During installation of CM patch set (like 9207 patchset or 9208 patchset), following error: "error in writing to file '/u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.7/oracm/bin/oracm (text file busy)"

Reason/Resolution: This error occurs if you are trying to install the CM patch set without stopping the ORACM service. ORACM services on both nodes should be stopped before installing the CM patch set.

3. After installing Cluster manager, ORACM service should be started on all nodes to proceed with the RDBMS installation. I have faced this situation personally that service does not starts on both nodes. For example, if it is a 2 nodes RAC, service could be started on one node only. Starting the service on one node kills the service on other node.

Reason/Resolution: The service has to be started as root and requires the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL to be set correctly. So i had set the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL properly as "oracle" user and when switching to "root" user to start the service, i was doing "su -" instead of "su". "su -" does not carries over the environment settings and hence value of LD_ASSUME_KERNEL was not carried over to the user "root"

4. When trying to apply the 9208 CM patch set, all nodes were not considered by the installation. Following error was found in the installation logs:

"Cluster nodes cannot be retrieved from the vendor clusterware (/tmp/OraInstall2008-03-20_12-12-02AM/oui/bin/lsnodes.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libcmdll.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory). This system will not be considered as a vendor clusterware"

Also, "lsnodes" command, which can be used to verify all the nodes in the RAC was failing.

Reason/Resolution: Actually the correct order to be followed to install the 9208 RAC should be:

--> 9204 CM
--> 9204 RDBMS
--> 9208 CM Patchset
--> 9208 RDBMS patchset.

The reason for the above error and "lsnodes" failing is that $ORACLE_HOME/lib32 directory does not exist. The file libcmdll.so mentioned in the error is located inside the lib32 directory and lib32 is created only after the installation of RDBMS software and not the CM. So if you don't follow the correct order and try to install 9208 CM patchset after 9204 CM, you'll get this error and "lsnodes" will also not work to show all the nodes in the cluster (which you assume should be there after you have installed 9204 CM successfully). Instead after 9204, you should be installing 9204 RDBMS software. Then if you apply the 9208 patchset, this error won't be seen and "lsnodes" will also work.

5. Always check the inventory on all nodes to verify that correct versions of CM and RDBMS patchsets have been applied on all nodes. Inventory can be verified by launching OUI. The abnormality in versions is more prevalent in CM patchsets where if you apply 9208 CM patchset on one node, the CM version on other node is still 9204. However, this can be true for RDBMS patchsets also. So in such cases, you need to apply the patchset on other node also separately (ideally all the installation in RAC happens from a single node only and other nodes are updated automatically) to have the correct version. You can check the version of CM on each node by following command after starting the ORACM service:

$ head -1 $ORACLE_HOME/oracm/log/cm.log

New iPhone unveiled by Apple

Apple on Monday unveiled a new iPhone faster, lower the price of their existing model to $ 99, and released details of its new operating system.

However, Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) CEO Steve Jobs was not presented to the company's World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco, where the company presents its products.

By contrast, Philip Schiller, company Senior Vice President of product marketing throughout the world, demonstrated the new iPhone 3G S, which can perform up to 3.6 times faster than the previous, second generation iPhone, iPhone 3G.

Shares of Apple, which declined as much as $ 5.24 earlier, were $ 2.07 lower at $ 142.60 after the presentation. They ended the day by 82 cents, to $ 143.85.

The iPhone will come in three sizes and prices. The new phone will have a 16 gigabyte model for $ 199 and a 32-gigibyte version of $ 299. Apple will sell a second-generation iPhone 3G 8 gigabytes of memory for $ 99 - but the cheapest price for the device.

Prices are subsidized by AT & T (T, Fortune 500), the exclusive wireless carrier for the phone to customers signing new contracts.

The new phone also comes with a 3 megapixel camera with video capture and editing capabilities, with improved battery life up to 12 hours of talk time and 30 hours of audio, voice command and control by holding the home and one - in digital compass.

IPhone OS: Apple also demonstrated its new operating system for the iPhone, after days of competitor Palm (PALM) has launched its very Ballyhoo Pre phone.

The new iPhone OS 3.0, which was released in March, have been cut, copy and paste the capacity of all applications for iPhone users who have always demanded. The operating system will also feature a gesture to undo, to undo the last action by shaking the phone.

"Apple in a different environment now than when it launched the iPhone, as there are several dealers with best deals," said Edward Zabitzky, Apple Research analyst ACI. "Apple does not really change much the platform, but the net result is that given the competitiveness."

Fully integrated search, text messaging and multimedia auto-fill passwords have also been added for the iPhone, although the multimedia text messages will not be available in AT & T (T, Fortune 500) until later in the summer .

The new operating system will allow users to rent and buy movies directly from their phones with iTunes, and have the parental control functionality.

Snow Leopard: Apple said that its new operating system, Snow Leopard, will be available in September and may do some work up to 90% faster than the current operating system Leopard. Apple said Snow Leopard is more shock resistant than its predecessor and is smaller 6GB.

Rival Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) said its new operating system Windows 7 will be released in October.

Snow Leopard will cost $ 29 to upgrade to Leopard, which is $ 100 less than the previous price of Apple.

Apple also unveiled a new and faster browser Safari. Safari 4 can track changes in many of the most visited websites, and use the iTunes "Cover Flow" to explore the interaction through the browser history.

The company redesigned its Quicktime video viewer and editor, giving users the ability to share videos on YouTube, iTunes and MobileMe, which allows playback on iPhone.

New MacBook: The new 13-inch and 15 inch MacBook Pros is both a 3.06 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, the fastest processor Apple has ever used.

Like most 17-inch MacBook Pro, the 15-inch will also feature a new lithium battery that gets up to seven hours of battery life and three times the recharge of most laptops.

The company announced the MacBook Air will cost $ 1,499, a price cut of $ 700. A 13-inch MacBook Pro costs $ 100 less than $ 1199, and 15-inch and 17 inch MacBook Pro will be $ 300 cheaper at $ 1699 and $ 2499 respectively.

The company offers a low price NETBOOK, as some had expected, but analysts cheered the move.

"They should not compete in the world NETBOOK because diminished brand value," said Zabitzky. "It would be foolish for Apple to go after short-term gain long term pain."

Jobs, who has been on leave due to illness, is expected to return to work at the end of the month.

Free Nero alternatives

Tired of using Nero? or just looking around for best, free alternative for Nero CD/DVD Burner. Nero is one of the best softwre out ther for CD/DVD burning but it proves to cost quite high plus for some time now have gathered some bulk because of added features.

Below I've listed some of the best, free alternatives I can find.

1. Infrarecorder

This is what I'm currently using for my office laptop, since I need not install it plus is has all you might expect in a CD/DVD Burning software like Nero. It's also simple and straightforward. This free software's highlights are as follows:

* Support for Multi-Session
* Very Light on Resources
* Support for not just ISO, but also BIN
and CUE images
* Burning on Dual Layer DVDs is supported

2. CDBurnerXP

I guess this is the most popular free alternative for Nero but I listed it second here since I'm more for simplicity and ease of use. It's highlights are:

* Multi Language Interface
* Support for Blu Ray/HD DVD
* BIN > ISO converter included

3.Burn At Once

This is also a great CD/DVD Burning application that can copy discs on the fly but hasn't updated for a while now. Has these features:

* Tagging of media by importing data from FreeDB
* Multi Language Support
* Drag and Drop Interface

Netbook Article

Was reading this article regarding the future of netbook at CNN by Wes Finley-Price. I myself don't own a "netbook" but I do have a 9 year old Fujitsu Lifebook (it was a 2000 model) touchscreen that's about as thin as the netbooks nowadays but around twice the size. I t still is enough for basic computing and use it more than my 17 inch laptops. I found this CNN article quite good and thought of sharing it here. So here it it:

I don’t own a netbook, but I do own a 5-year-old Dell Inspiron laptop. I like to think of my Inspiron as an “oversized netbook” simply because it makes me appear more trendy.

According to an April survey by Changewave Research, one out of every four computers
purchased in the next three months will be a netbook. These small, inexpensive laptop computers are quickly becoming the latest hip accessory. Unfortunately, their bare-bones computing abilities make them about as useful as a chihuahua in a handbag.

In a TECH.BLORGE interview, Lenovo analyst Matt Kohut admits that netbooks may not live up to the expectations of some consumers.

Initially people weren’t sure what to do with them. Retailers were saying, “here’s this new netbook PC,” and the average person picked one up and said, “oh wow, that’s small, maybe I can run Photoshop.” So, as an industry, we ended up with a lot of returns, because the functionality of what netbooks could do was not well communicated.

However, Kohut is upbeat about the future of netbooks. Second-generation netbooks are expected to have beefier computing power, run Windows 7 and offer 3G wireless capabilities, all while price points continue to drop.

So where is Apple’s sleek, user-friendly netbook alternative? Apple CFO Timothy Cook told investors not to hold their breath at the company’s quarterly-earnings call:

When I look at what is being sold in the netbook space today, I see cramped keyboards, terrible software, junky hardware, very small screens, and just not a consumer experience, and not something that we would put the Mac brand on, quite frankly.

However, Ars Technica isn’t quite buying Cook’s skepticism and points out that Apple always trashes an idea before doing it.

Even though they can’t play games or edit video and often strain when loading YouTube, netbooks continue to sell. Do these low-priced Internet browsers fulfill an actual need, or are customers simply blinded by impossibly low prices?

Wolfram Alpha

Wolfram Alpha, does it ring a bell? Well maybe not but according to an article it has been making a buzz in the tech community. The said web site/service is said to launch on May 18 in the U.S.

Wolfram|Alpha looks like a search engine: it has a box where you type in a question or query terms. That’s about where the similarities end, though, because, unlike Google or Ask, Wolfram|Alpha is kind of like an enormous calculator. It takes your question and crunches out an entirely new answer, even if the answer isn’t something that’s been posted on the Web before.
Wolfram Alpha and Google are very different animals. Google is designed to help people find Web pages. It's a big lookup system basically, a librarian for the Web. Wolfram Alpha on the other hand is not at all oriented towards finding Web pages, it's for computing factual answers. It's much more like a giant calculator for computing all sorts of answers to questions that involve or require numbers. Alpha is for calculating, not for finding. So it doesn't compete with Google's core business at all. In fact, it is much more comptetive with the Wikipedia than with Google.On the other hand, while Alpha doesn't compete with Google, Google may compete with Alpha. Google is increasingly trying to answer factual questions directly -- for example unit conversions, questions about the time, the weather, the stock market, geography, etc. But in this area, Alpha has a powerful advantage: it's built on top of Wolfram's Mathematica engine, which represents decades of work and is perhaps the most powerful calculation engine ever built.

Wolfram Alpha also solves equations and shows the steps it took to do so, which will be of interest to high school students and math majors. Not into number crunching? If you live near the coast, you could type in “tides in ____” and find charts of tidal and lunar information. You could also graph that against other cities, which would be cool if you’re a surfer.

Wolfram Alpha is also interesting for academic queries. Type in “Internet users in Africa” and you’ll get the total number of Web users there — 51 million — as well as lists of the number of users by country plus graphs of this information. If you’re in the fisheries business, or if you’re an environmentalist, you could type in “fish produced in Italy versus France” to get an idea of how that sector is faring. The answer includes specifics, like how much of the fish crop was farmed versus what was captured. Such data could be used to argue policy points or to debate whether or not certain industries are sustainable.

Of course, questions abound. It remains to be seen just how smart Wolfram Alpha really is, or can be. How easily extensible is it? Will it get increasingly hard to add and maintain knowledge as more is added to it? Will it ever make mistakes? What forms of knowledge will it be able to handle in the future?

I think Wolfram would agree that it is probably never going to be able to give relationship or career advice, for example, because that is "fuzzy" -- there is often no single right answer to such questions. And I don't know how comprehensive it is, or how it will be able to keep up with all the new knowledge in the world (the knowledge in the system is exclusively added by Wolfram's team right now, which is a labor intensive process). But Wolfram is an ambitious guy. He seems confident that he has figured out how to add new knowledge to the system at a fairly rapid pace, and he seems to be planning to make the system extremely broad.

And there is the question of bias, which we addressed as well. Is there any risk of bias in the answers the system gives because all the knowledge is entered by Wolfram's team? Those who enter the knowledge and design the formal models in the system are in a position to both define the way the system thinks -- both the questions and the answers it can handle. Wolfram believes that by focusing on factual knowledge -- things like you might find in the Wikipedia or textbooks or reports -- the bias problem can be avoided. At least he is focusing the system on questions that do have only one answer -- not questions for which there might be many different opinions. Everyone generally agrees for example that the closing price of GOOG on a certain data is a particular dollar amount. It is not debatable. These are the kinds of questions the system addresses.

But even for some supposedly factual questions, there are potential biases in the answers one might come up with, depending on the data sources and paradigms used to compute them. Thus the choice of data sources has to be made carefully to try to reflect as non-biased a view as possible. Wolfram's strategy is to rely on widely accepted data sources like well-known scientific models, public data about factual things like the weather, geography and the stock market published by reputable organizatoins and government agencies, etc. But of course even this is a particular worldview and reflects certain implicit or explicit assumptions about what data sources are authoritative.

This is a system that reflects one perspective -- that of Wolfram and his team -- which probably is a close approximation of the mainstream consensus scientific worldview of our modern civilization. It is a tool -- a tool for answering questions about the world today, based on what we generally agree that we know about it. Still, this is potentially murky philosophical territory, at least for some kinds of questions. Consider global warming -- not all scientists even agree it is taking place, let alone what it signifies or where the trends are headed. Similarly in economics, based on certain assumptions and measurements we are either experiencing only mild inflation right now, or significant inflation. There is not necessarily one right answer -- there are valid alternative perspectives.

I agree with Wolfram, that bias in the data choices will not be a problem, at least for a while. But even scientists don't always agree on the answers to factual questions, or what models to use to describe the world -- and this disagreement is essential to progress in science in fact. If there is only one "right" answer to any question there could never be progress, or even different points of view. Fortunately, Wolfram is desigining his system to link to alternative questions and answers at least, and even to sources for more information about the answers (such as the Wikipeda for example). In this way he can provide unambiguous factual answers, yet also connect to more information and points of view about them at the same time. This is important.

It is ironic that a system like Wolfram Alpha, which is designed to answer questions factually, will probably bring up a broad range of questions that don't themselves have unambiguous factual answers -- questions about philosophy, perspective, and even public policy in the future (if it becomes very widely used). It is a system that has the potential to touch our lives as deeply as Google. Yet how widely it will be used is an open question too.

The system is beautiful, and the user interface is already quite simple and clean. In addition, answers include computationally generated diagrams and graphs -- not just text. It looks really cool. But it is also designed by and for people with IQ's somewhere in the altitude of Wolfram's -- some work will need to be done dumbing it down a few hundred IQ points so as to not overwhelm the average consumer with answers that are so comprehensive that they require a graduate degree to fully understand.

It also remains to be seen how much the average consumer thirsts for answers to factual questions. I do think all consumers at times have a need for this kind of intelligence once in a while, but perhaps not as often as they need something like Google. But I am sure that academics, researchers, students, government employees, journalists and a broad range of professionals in all fields definitely need a tool like this and will use it every day.

For now if you want to try using Wolfram Alpha you just have to wait until it's been launch since it's only available now for a "few individuals".

Top Web Picture Editors

Digital cameras are common nowadays and have also reduced their prices making it easier to have on. Gone were the days when you have to buy film and have them developed after use. One great thing about digital pictures is that you can easily preview it in your digital camera as well as edit the pictures you've taken.

Picture editing can be done using photo editors either free or for a price. Here I've collected some web tools for editing your picture online,for free or at most free.

1. Picnik - from their site: "Picnik makes your photos fabulous with easy to use yet powerful editing tools. Tweak to your heart's content, then get creative with oodles of effects, fonts, shapes, and frames." If you already use Flickr for your photos, you're only a click away from taking a Picnik.

2. Splashup- Splashup "is a powerful editing tool and photo manager. With all the features professionals use and novices want, it's easy to use, works in real-time, and allows you to edit many images at once." You'd wonder how something this extensive could be free - and it all runs within the browser.

3. FotoFlexer - FotoFlexer describes itself as "the world's most advanced online image editor." Using it, you can edit photos from Photobucket, MySpace, Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, and more.

4. Pixlr - "Pixlr is a free online photo editor; jump in and start: edit, adjust, filter. It's just what you imagine!" Alexa says it's the "fastest growing photo editor online." If these resources are starting to look similar to your eye, remember you don't have to use all of them - just pick the one that works best for your needs.

5. flauntR- flauntR is a suite that includes the ability to edit images, add effects, add text, and print the results on everything from mugs to posters. You might be overwhelmed with the options here, but... isn't that better than being underwhelmed?

6. Photoshop Express- Adobe's Photoshop was really the first image editor of its kind to herald in the age of digital photography, though it was designed for professionals and its endless options could be daunting (and bank- breakingly expensive) for the layman. Now, Photoshop.com is on the Web to help that very same layman -- for free or plus levels of membership -- edit, store, and share his photos. Lots of helpful tutorials promise to guide the casual user through editing pickles.

7. PiZap-- PiZap's tagline is "fun with photos made easy." It's another flavor of photo editor/storage center that, like flauntR, allows you to print the results to mugs, bags, and t-shirts. PiZap invites developers to check out its API for more personalization options (which is usually a good thing).

8. Aviary- Aviary lets you: "edit images, create mind-blowing effects, design logos, find colors, collaborate, and more. All you need is a Web browser." This particular brand looks to be the one to beat, as they have several different tools in development.

9. DrPic-- DrPic says it's "the easiest free online picture editor" and that it has "processed over five million pictures."

10. Cameroid -- Cameroid lets you "take crazy (or not) snaps with your webcam straight from your browser." I featured this one in a CNN.com live video a while ago, and it certainly deserves to be mentioned again. If you're looking for something else to do with your webcam, give it a cameroid.

There you go... the list is not absolute though I might have missed some others. Feel free to comment about those I missed.

Windows 7 RC free download

Windows 7 RC was officially released for public download this morning in the U.S. It's supposed to be a (mostly) finalized version of the new OS that successfully completed beta testing and could potentially be sold as the "final product".

The DVD image is at 2.36GB so you better have a lot of bandwidth if you plan on downloading it. It looks like Microsoft has solved its distribution issues after demand for the beta version of Windows 7 crippled a number of servers when it was released earlier in January.

The RC Windows 7 boasts of a quicker install, more polished and customizable and easier to use than the earlier builds.

I don't really like installing preproduction software but if you like doing so anyone is free to download and use Windows 7 RC until the temporary license expires June 2010.

Firefox 3 performance sucks

I have been using firefox as an alternative browser from the start happily up until they released firefox 3.x.x. I don't know about you guys who also use firefox as a browser but here is why I think the new firefox 3 sucks and READ : IT SUCKS BIG TIME at least inmy opinion.

The first time I upgraded to firefox 3 I immediately noticed how long it takes to start-up and after a lot of time using it I got irritated since the browser would usually crash on me. Finally after some days or weeks they released an update to it but still with the same outcome; it HANGS. I can deal with the slow start-up but not with hangs/crashes, I hate seeing the "not responding" at the firefox 3 bar.

And for those thinking it might be my computer. well I'm already using a high-end pc and laptop with 4G of memory so hardware is certainly not an issue.

I'm still looking forward that the firefox team can fix the crashes but for now I think O'll be using Chrome or IE7 instead.

If only Chrome has a seobook toolbar available for it.

Well, just my 2 cents

Facebook phishing by Fbaction.net

I've received news about a phishing attack on facebook.com and if you are a facebook user such as me please read on...

If you get an email message that looks to be from Facebook with the subject, “Hello,” and featuring the text below, don’t bother clicking on the link included. Doing so takes you to a site called fbaction.net that mimics the look of the main Facebook login page, hoping to get you to sign in. Naturally, if you do that, the site will have access to your account and can send out more of these messages to your friends.

The message body will apparently read something like this (with YOURFRIEND being replaced by the name of a friend of yours):

YOURFRIEND sent you a message.

Subject: Hello

Segway Technology in a Motorcycle

gyroscopes, accelerometers and motion sensors, like the Segway scooter.

unobike1.jpg

young inventor has created a motorbike with a twist -- it uses two wheels but they are positioned right next to each other, giving it the illusion of being a powered unicycle. And even better, it might help save the planet.

unobike2.jpeg

Ben Gulak has spent several years building the electric Uno that uses gyroscopic technology -- like the infamous Segway commuter device -- to stay upright.

unobike9.jpg

The bizarre-looking contraption has only one switch -- on or off -- and is controlled entirely by body movement. The rider leans forwards to accelerate to speeds of 25 mph and back to slow down. It has two wheels side-by-side and has been turning heads wherever it has been ridden.

unobike10.jpg

Ben Gulak designed the Uno himself with the help of a simple 3D program
The green machine is so small and light it can be taken indoors and carried into lifts -- and is recharged by being plugged into the mains.

The wheels are completely independent, allowing the bike to turn on a sixpence and the technology takes the balance and guesswork out of riding a unicycle.
Its 18-year-old creator is now looking for investors to get the Uno into production and onto the streets.
Ben, from Ontario , Canada , said: 'I was inspired to make the bike after visiting
China a few years ago and seeing all the smog.

'They all drive little bikes that are really polluting and I wanted to make something to combat that.
'I started with the concept because if something doesn't look cool people just won't be interested
.

unobike10.jpg

Uno works like a way - just tilt your body forward to start moving...

Ben Gulak turns heads from onlookers as he rides past them.

After coming up with the concept I started to build it and now have the first prototype and the reaction has been amazing.

'It has two wheels side by side and that means it is easier to turn as they are completely independent and have their own suspension.

'The bike has a 'neutral point' and when you lean forward it accelerates to keep the neutral point in the right place.

It has a couple of gyros and is basically self-balancing -- it takes the guesswork out of riding a unicycle.

The bike takes a bit of getting used to because you have to learn to trust it. But it doesn't take long.

It takes any weight and weighs 120 lbs and can fit into a lift so you can take it indoors to charge it up.
